The Island Arts Gallery hosts a range of workshops including weaving/basketry, photography, cyanotype, painting, jewellery making and  community information workshops. During the past year, the gallery was honoured to host both Arts Law Australia and the Flying Arts Alliance who offered free community workshops regarding a range of issues related to arts law and funding opportunities available to artists living on the island.

Fibre Arts Workshops

Paula Boo offers a range of fibre arts workshops at the Island Arts Gallery. Contact Paula to organize a custom workshop. She is happy to host small workshops or one on one sessions.

Coil Stitch

Coiling techniques are used around the world in many different cultures. Paula‚Äôs coil workshops share commonly used coiling stitches using mainly Bangalow Palm inflorescence, hand-dyed and paper raffia although other materials may be incorporated into the workshops. 


Children's workshops include woven paper raffia bracelets. 
Minimum age: 5 yrs
Duration: 1 hr
Cost: $35/participant


Minimum age: 14 yrs
Duration: 2 hrs
Cost: $65/participant


Minimum age: 11 yrs
Duration: 4 hrs
Cost: $100/participant

Twist Weave / Twining Basket

Twist weave is a basketry technique used in many forms and with many fibres both soft and hard. This workshop uses a variety of natural fibres collected locally, to create a unique basket dictated by the moods of the materials. Fibres may include (depending on my stock at the time) Bangalow Palm, Coccus Palm, Banana, Lomandra spp., Monstera sheath, cane)


Twist weave workshops are 5 hours in duration at a cost of $125/participant

Palm Sheath Stitch

Palm Sheaths are unique to each palm species in size and texture. During this workshop, the participant will create a small sheath planter stitched with hand-dyed raffia.


Palm Sheath Stitch workshops are 1.5 hours in duration at a cost of $50/participant
